BE KIND
The Moody Makerspace is made better through the participation of folks from all walks of life. We desire to create a community that is rich in perspective, which means not only accepting, but appreciating what makes each of us unique. As such, anyone found being hateful in any way towards another user of the space will be asked to leave (and may not be allowed to return).
BUILD WITH A BUDDY
"It's dangerous to go alone." Or at least it could be, especially when using certain tools. Should something go wrong, you need a buddy there to help you out. Ask a staff member to assist you while operating potentially dangerous tools.
DON THE APPROPRIATE PPE
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required when using the space. The degree of protection depends on what you're doing, but could include close-toed shoes, safety glasses, a respirator, gloves, or ear muffs. Aside from shoes, all of these items are provided in the Moody Makerspace.
CLEAN AS YOU GO
When you are done working on your project, clean up after yourself. This includes putting away all tools and materials, as well as sweeping up and wiping down your workbench.
LOOK FOR WAYS TO SAVE
With just a little extra thought, you can help us save materials, time, and the environment! Use scrap material whenever you can, carefully plan to minimize waste before you cut, reduce the filament needed for your 3D prints, avoid using plastics when there is a sustainable alternative -- and if you spot a way that we can save, let us know!
REPORT THE BAD
The only way we can improve is by acknowledging where things could have gone better. In order to do that, we need you to tell us when things go wrong, even if no one saw it happen. That includes injuries to yourself or others, near-misses, broken equipment, or even when you notice a mistake in a workshop guide or tool process. We promise you won't be punished for reporting accidents. (Note: Willfully breaking the rules is not an accident. ☺)
SHARE THE GOOD
The success of the Moody Makerspace depends on you to get the word out! The larger our community, the more knowledge we have to draw from when facing particularly monumental challenges, so if you've found the Makerspace to be a valuable resource...share that with your colleagues! Maybe they could benefit from it too!
Restrictions
All uses of Moody Makerspace resources must conform to the technology usage policies of Baylor University, particularly: “All students, faculty, staff, and other authorized users are responsible for seeing that these technology systems are used in an effective, efficient, ethical, and lawful manner. The use of technology systems is a privilege, not a right, that may be revoked at any time for misuse.” ( BU-PP 025 Technology Usage Policy)
Given the capabilities of 3D printers and other fabricating tools, the following uses are PROHIBITED:
- Any use of a machine that violates copyright or patent laws;
- Any use of a machine to create objects of a questionable moral or ethical nature;
- Any use of a machine to manufacture items of questionable lawful use (e.g., objects that might be used as a weapon).
Use of the equipment in the Moody Makerspace must be supervised by trained staff. If there is a question of appropriate use, professional staff will make a judgment as to the suitability of a proposed project. Appeal may be made to the Associate Vice President, Library and Academic Technology Services, if a decision is disputed.
Use of Moody Makerspace resources may also be subject to the University’s Intellectual Property Policy, particularly disclosure of inventions/creations by Baylor personnel or students.
Failure to adhere to any of the rules stated above could result in the suspension of computing privileges at Baylor University. Reference also: Study Commons Technology Rules of Use, ITS Policies, and Library Policies.
NOTICE WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT AND OTHER LEGAL RESTRICTIONS: The copyright (Title 17, United States Code), intellectual property (patent law, for example, under Title 35, United States Code), and other laws of the United States may govern the making of photocopies or other reproductions of content protected by copyright, patent, and other laws. Libraries and archives furnish unsupervised photocopy or other reproducing equipment for the convenience of and use by patrons. Under 17 U.S.C. § 108(f)(2), the provision of unsupervised photocopy or reproducing equipment for use by patrons does not excuse the person who uses the reproduction equipment from liability for copyright infringement for any such act or for any later use of such copy or phonorecord if it exceeds fair use as provided by Section 107 or any other provision of the copyright law. Nor does the provision of unsupervised photocopy or reproducing equipment for use by patrons excuse the person who uses the reproducing equipment from liability for patent, tort (such as products liability), or other laws. This institution reserves the right to refuse to make available or provide access to photocopy or other reproducing equipment if, in its judgment, use of such equipment would involve violation of copyright, patent, or other laws.
