Brett Harper, PhD

Brett Harper, PhD
Manager of Creative Making, University Libraries

 

Brett joined the Experiential Learning team in the fall semester of 2024. He holds a B.S. in Biology and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Studies, both from Baylor University. Prior to this role, Brett dedicated seven years to vocational ministry, including five years leading a church-planting team in Athens, Greece, where he mentored high school students and young adults. In his free time, Brett enjoys reading fantasy novels, playing board games and RPGs, and working on creative projects such as painting miniatures, 3D printing, and laser engraving.

As the Manager of Creative Making, Brett collaborates with faculty to integrate hands-on learning into coursework and research, consults with students on academic and personal projects, and oversees the operation of the Makerspace and the Innovation Garage. His unique blend of experience in science, creative making, and community leadership shapes his approach to experiential learning, encouraging a collaborative and innovative environment for students, faculty, and staff alike.

Joy joined the Makerspace team in August 2025. She holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Cornell University and is a registered architect in Texas. Before joining the Makerspace team, Joy worked for 15 years as an architect and project manager, guiding designs from schematic phase to construction completion. She has experience in residential, office, and institutional architecture, and particularly enjoyed collaborating with different disciplines.

In her role as Makerspace Coordinator, Joy works closely with students, faculty, and staff to provide support for their courses, personal projects, and explorations, while ensuring efficient operation of the Makerspace. She is passionate about exploring the design process with the community and innovating through collaboration and experiential learning.

In her free time, Joy enjoys spending time with her husband, Tom, and two daughters, Hesed and Natalie. She also enjoys doing puzzles, exploring urban spaces, and discovering thoughtful design.
