3D Printing Services

We encourage everyone to learn 3D printing, but we understand that it’s not always feasible or of interest to everyone. If you’d prefer not to learn the process, our Print Request service allows our staff to handle the printing for you.

We offer two different methods of 3D printing:

Filament Printing

Filament 3D printing, also known as Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), uses a plastic filament that is melted and deposited layer by layer to create your object. This widely used and cost-effective method is ideal for projects that prioritize functionality over ultra fine detail, such as prototypes, larger items, or moderately detailed designs. For example:

  • A bear statue for your desk
  • A phone case
  • A cosplay mask or helmet
  •

    Resin Printing

Resin 3D printing, commonly referred to as Stereolithography (SLA) or Digital Light Processing (DLP), uses liquid resin that is cured layer by layer with a UV light source to create your object. This method is much more expensive than filament 3D printing, but offers exceptional precision and smooth surface finishes, making it ideal for projects requiring intricate details or highly detailed prototypes. For example:

  • Tabletop gaming miniatures
  • Jewelry pieces for creating molds
  • Small replicas of historical artifacts
  •

    How much does it Cost?

We offer two payment options to suit your needs and preferences: PawPrints and the ELC Storefront.

    • PawPrints: Similar to printing documents on campus, you can use your available PawPrints to pay for 3D printing. However, because PawPrints funds cannot be used to restock our materials, this option has a higher cost. If you choose this option, we will submit the charge to your PawPrints account during Step 4, outlined below.
    • ELC Storefront: You can also pay with a credit or debit card through our ELC Storefront. Payments made through the storefront directly support the Makerspace by funding the restocking of supplies. As a result, this option offers much lower rates. If you choose this option, you will need to submit a proof of purchase during Step 4, outlined below.
