We encourage everyone to learn 3D printing, but we understand that it’s not always feasible or of interest to everyone. If you’d prefer not to learn the process, our Print Request service allows our staff to handle the printing for you.
We offer two different methods of 3D printing:
Filament Printing
Filament 3D printing, also known as Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), uses a plastic filament that is melted and deposited layer by layer to create your object. This widely used and cost-effective method is ideal for projects that prioritize functionality over ultra fine detail, such as prototypes, larger items, or moderately detailed designs. For example:
Resin Printing
Resin 3D printing, commonly referred to as Stereolithography (SLA) or Digital Light Processing (DLP), uses liquid resin that is cured layer by layer with a UV light source to create your object. This method is much more expensive than filament 3D printing, but offers exceptional precision and smooth surface finishes, making it ideal for projects requiring intricate details or highly detailed prototypes. For example:
How much does it Cost?
Current prices (pre-tax) for resin and filament 3D prints can be found in the table below. All purchases must be processed through our ELC Storefront using a debit or credit card. Proceeds from the storefront directly support the Makerspace by funding the restocking of supplies. These resources are provided at highly subsidized prices to reduce the financial burden to students, faculty, and staff. To complete your print, you will need to submit a proof of purchase during Step 4, outlined below.
Filament Price | Resin Price |

$0.02/gram | $0.20/mL |
Important
Patrons who choose to use the online 3D printing service will be charged a $2.00 Slicing Fee per model. To avoid this fee, patrons are welcome to slice their own files and bring them to the Makerspace to start their print(s) in-person. Patrons must have completed the 3D Printing Apprentice module in our Creative Making Pathways course on Canvas, prior to being permitted to use the 3D Printers in-person. 3D prints for legitimate academic use and/or research support are provided free of charge. However, patrons must come to the Makerspace in-person during open hours to take advantage of this option.
