Company & Industry Research Tutorial

This tutorial will take you through the steps to researching a company or industry.

Step 1a - Industry Codes

The first step in researching your industry is to find the correct name for the industry and the appropriate industry code. This is a good time to familiarize yourself with the current industry code. The NAICS (North America Industry Classification System) code is the new code that is taking the place of the old SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) code. The NAICS code works on a six digit classification scheme where the older SIC code used a four digit classification.

The following shows the arrangement of the SIC code:

Major Group 48 Communications
Industry Group Number 483 Radio & Television Broadcasting Stations
Industry Number 4832 Radio Broadcasting Stations

The following shows the arrangement of the NAICS code:

Sector 51 Information
Subsector 515 Broadcasting (except Internet)
Industry Group 5151 Radio Broadcasting Broadcasting
NAICS Industry 51511 Radio Broadcasting
Individual U.S. Industries 51512 Radio Stations
