Using Leganto Reading Lists in Canvas

Add Items

When adding items to your list, it is best to start with the Library Search feature, where you can easily add items that the library has access to directly to your list. When an item from our catalog has been added to your list via the Library Search feature, a URL link will be available for students to access the item in the database where it is stored. This is always preferable to uploading a PDF file of resources that the library subscribes to, because we are better able to track usage of library materials, while also avoiding any potential copyright issues. To begin adding items, refer to the instructions below:

Step 1: From your reading list, click the green "+ Add" button:

Step 2: Choose the "Search the library" option from the drop down menu. In the "Search the library" pop up window, you can search our library collection for articles, eBooks, print books, audio/visual material and more to add resources to your list. After you have located the item you would like to add, hover your mouse over the item and click the green + button. You will then be given the option to choose which section of your reading list you would like to add your resource to:

Step 3: After you have chosen the section, click the green "Add" button to add the item to your list.

In cases where the library does not have access to a resource, you will need to make a "Fair Use" analysis to determine if uploading a copy to your reading list will lean towards or away from "Fair Use" regarding copyright compliance. For books, the general copyright guideline for how much of the work can be reproduced is 10% of the work in it's entirety, which will typically come out to one or two chapters. To use the Upload File feature, please refer to the instructions below:

Step 1: To upload your own files to your reading list, start by clicking the + Add button. Then, choose the Upload Files option from the drop down menu. Next, you will be presented with the option to either drag and drop your files into the grey box, or use the Click to browse for a file option:

Step 2: After uploading your file, fill out the required fields presented in the form, and once complete, click the Add button.

*Please Note, for any file uploaded to your reading list, the library will be notified to verify that it is in compliance with copyright guidelines. For book chapters, if the amount uploaded exceeds what is considered "Fair Use," instructors will be asked to remove the resource from their list, and we can then look into alternative solutions. If the item has not been removed by the instructor within 3 days, library staff reserve the right to have it removed.

The Add Items Manually feature will allow you to create a citation from scratch, which makes it a good option for linking to websites or submitting course reserve requests. To add an item to your reading list manually, please refer to the instructions below:

Step 1: click the green "+ Add" button from the reading list and choose the "Manual entry" option from the drop down menu:

Step 2: Input the title of the resource that you are adding and choose the appropriate resource type from the drop down menu. If you are uploading a file, you can either drag and drop the file into the gray box on the page, or use the "Click to browse for a file option." If you are linking to a resource, such as using a website article, continue on to the next page and input the URL into the form. After you have finished filling out all of the required information, click "Save."

Important Note* When using the "Manual entry" option for linking to resources in Baylor library databases, you will need to paste the following proxy link before the website URL to provide off campus access for students:  http://ezproxy.baylor.edu/login?url=

The "Cite it!" tool is a web browser bookmark that enables you to add the webpage you are currently viewing as a citation on your reading list. To install this tool, please refer to the instructions below:

Step 1: Click the "Settings" link from your reading list and then click the "Cite it!" link:

Step 2: From the pop up window, drag the "Cite it!" button to your browsers bookmark bar:

Step 3: Once the bookmark is installed, you can simply click the "Cite it!" button from your browser to add the webpage you are viewing to your reading list. The "Cite it!" tool will pull data from the website to create the reading list citation, however, it is recommended that you review the citation to ensure accuracy.

Important Note* When using the "Cite it!" tool for resources that are not open access, such as articles and eBooks from databases that the Baylor libraries subscribe to, you will need to paste the following proxy link before the website URL to provide off campus access for students:  http://ezproxy.baylor.edu/login?url=
