Literacies

University Libraries have a range of initiatives to help faculty design and embed literacy curriculum in their courses, to prepare students for careers as thoughtful, effective communicators and content creators.

What is Data Literacy?

Data literacy is the ability to read, understand, analyze, and communicate data as information. Data literacy builds upon information literacy with a focus on understanding what data is, how to handle and use data, how to interpret graphs and visualizations of data, and how to effectively draw conclusions from data to inform decisions. This course is intended to establish a basic understanding of data literacy skills.

Getting Started with Data Literacy

If you're looking to get your students basic, introductory data literacy instruction, our microcourses are a great place to start! The microcourse on data literacy introduces students to a definition of data literacy, an applicable approach to data literacy, and why it is important to develop our data literacy skills.

  • Students receive a new badge for each completed micro course. There are microcourses focused on other literacies that we support (information, media, and making). Complete all four and receive the "Baylor University Libraries' Literacies" badge.
  • Expected time commitment for the data literacy module is 10-15 minutes.
  • Faculty will find instructions and prepared assignments in Canvas Commons (just search "literacies").
  • Learners may self-enroll at: baylor.instructure.com/enroll/WWXKDL

Beyond the Microcourse

Fellows will spend part of the summer working through Canvas modules to learn various data and digital scholarship skills and tools, as well as learn about research data management and the research data lifecycle. Fellows will work closely with the Baylor Libraries' Data & Digital Scholarship team over the summer to integrate and apply these new skills into their research projects. At the culmination of the fellowship, all Fellows will prepare a short presentation highlighting their research project and how they integrated the data research tools and methods they learned about over the summer.
