Literacies

University Libraries have a range of initiatives to help faculty design and embed literacy curriculum in their courses, to prepare students for careers as thoughtful, effective communicators and content creators.

What is Media Literacy?

Utilizing the Center for Media Literacy definition of media literacy as a starting point, we define our approach to media literacy as the following:

Media literacy provides a framework to access, analyze, evaluate, create, and participate using messages in a variety of forms - from print to video to the internet.

Getting Started with Media Literacy

If you're looking to get your students basic, introductory media literacy instruction, our microcourses are a great place to start! The microcourse on media literacy introduces students to a definition of media literacy, an applicable approach to media literacy, and why it is important to develop our media literacy skills.

  • Students receive a new badge for each completed micro course. There are microcourses focused on the other literacies that we support (data, information, and making). Complete all four and students receive the "Baylor University Libraries' Literacies" badge.
  • Expected time commitment for the media literacy module is 10 minutes.
  • Faculty will find instructions and prepared assignments in Canvas Commons (just search "literacies").
  • Learners may self-enroll at: baylor.instructure.com/enroll/WWXKDL

Beyond the Microcourse

ELC Pathways, an exciting new source for orientation and skill development for all things Creative Making and Media, is currently in development and will be launching in Fall 2024!
