PUBH 5315: Theoretical Foundations of Health Behavior and Public Health

This guide walks through the literature review portion of PUBH5315

Brainstorming a Topic

The purpose of this literature review is to review research articles to explore how theory has been applied to a health behavior in the real world.

One of the best ways to start thinking about your topic is to look at the research that has already been published. Let this part of the process feel like a form of exploration—it can even be fun!

Move through the "Brainstorming Tutorial" on the lefthand side of the page, then explore the different resource types below.

Remember as you're searching to be paying attention to health behaviorspopulations, and associated health outcomes that interest you. We'll come back to these concepts in the next few sections of the guide.

Accessing Journals

A great option for exploring potential research topics is to read the newest issues of important public health related journals. You can browse in this way by using the Journals tab on the library’s website. To do this:

  1. Navigate to https://library.web.baylor.edu/
  2. Click on the Journals tab and search for the journal title you’re interested in for example The Journal of Public Health
  3. Click on the title you searched and scroll down to the area titled “View Online” and click on one of the database options
  4. At the right, you can select the year and journal issue you would like to browse

Accessing Newspapers

Some news sources can provide an excellent starting point for discovering potential areas of research. As a Baylor student you have access to the New York Times. Remember news articles are not resources to be included in your literature review but rather a place for you to read about current public health topics and spark ideas. To gain access to the New York Times follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to https://library.web.baylor.edu/
  2. Click on Databases and search “New York Times”
  3. Scroll down and click on “New York Times Online”
  4. Create an account with your Baylor email address
