APA (7th Edition) Overview

  • APA 7th ed. calls for Author last name, Publication Date, Page # citation style. 
  • However, APA also has specific formatting guidelines, so you will want to be sure to pay careful attention to the formatting section of this page. 
  • For extra help, check out the resources on the lefthand side of the page under "APA Resources." 
  • As a quick reference, I highly recommend downloading the student sample paper with annotations, created for the APA style official website.

Essay Format

Title Page

APA 7th edition requires all papers to have a title page. For a title page guidelines, see the resources on the left under APA Resources.

In general the Title Page should include: 

  • Title of the paper
  • Author(s) full names in first name, middle initial, last name format
  • Department name followed by the University affiliation
  • Course name and number (PUBH5315)
  • Instructor name
  • Assignment Due Date

The title page should have 1" margins, be centered, double spaced, and appear 3 to 4 lines below the top of the page

Each element listed above should appear on a separate line

Font and Font Size

There is no required font for APA style, however, using Times New Roman, 12pt font is usually a good idea.

Other recommended fonts include 11-point Calibri, 11-point Arial, 10-point Lucia Sans Unicode, 11-point Georgia, or 10-point Computer Modern 

Spacing and Margins 

Double spacing, including your list of references

1" margins

Note: Reference page should include a hanging indent 

Page Numbers

APA 7th edition requires page numbers, including on the title page

Page numbers should be Arabic (1,2,3...) and in the top right corner of the page

Section Titles and Heading Titles 

Section titles are included in APA 7th edition. Your sections may include the Title, Abstract, References, and Appendix

Section titles should be bolded, not italicized. 

Heading titles begin after the Abstract and end before the References sections. They may include the Methods, Results, and Discussion sections of your paper. 

In general, headings should be centered and bolded. 

 

Citation Style

In-text Citation 
  • Quotation (Author(s) last name or Organization, Year, Page #) 
  • Paraphrasing (Author(s) last name or Organization, Year, Page #) 

Note: If you are using direct quotes you always need to include the page number. If you are summarizing a general theme or idea, you may not need to use a specific page number, but you do need to use Author/Date citation. 

Examples of In-Text Citation: 

  • According to Hall (2023), "Direct Quote" (p.99)
  • Hall (2022) found that "Direct Quote" (p.99) 
  • [Other part of your sentence leading into quote] "Direct Quote" (Hall, 2022, p.99) 
Reference List
  1. Author name(s) in the order that they appear (Family name, then given name initials)
  2. Publication Date
  3. Title of source
  4. Title of book/journal/website the source comes from
  5. Volume and issue number
  6. Page numbers
  7. DOI number or CrossRef link for an academic journal source
  8. URL for a website source

FAQs

What if I'm citing a work with more than 1 Author? 
  • In-Text Citations: 
    • 2 Authors: (Author Last Name & Author Last Name, Year, Page Number) (Hall & Oates, 1980, p.2) 
    • 3 or more Authors: (First Author's Last Name et al., Year, Page Number) (Hall et al, 1980, p.22) 
    • Group Authors: (First time full name [abbreviation], Year, Page #); Subsequent (Abbreviation, Year, Page #) (Center for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2022, p.19) (CDC, 2022, p.19)
  • References
    • References should always include the full name of the organization, and all names of the authors as they appear. (Author, A.A., & Author, B.B. (Date). Title. Source. URL or DOI if available.)

Zotero

Zotero is an excellent way to keep track of your sources, especially when you are conducting a literature review. 

However, be sure not to rely on Zotero to format your citations for you in APA. Always double-check and hand format as needed.
