Kaltura Capture

The recommended way to record media and upload it to Kaltura is by using Kaltura Capture. This simple program will allow you to record up to two video sources along with one audio source. If you record a multi-source video, users viewing the video will see an interactive picture-in-picture video configuration which allows them to change which video is displayed larger and even move the smaller video around the screen.

Installing Kaltura Capture

To begin, access My Media, either through Canvas or Mediaspace. From there, select Add New > Create Media.

This will take you to a page with instructions for downloading and installing Kaltura Capture to your computer. Once you have installed the program, repeat this process (go to My Media, select Add New > Create Media) and you will be returned to the same page, but Kaltura Capture will launch. Be sure to always launch the software through Canvas, as this will ensure it uploads finished videos to your account.

Using Kaltura Capture

When you launch Kaltura Capture, you will see a basic interface:

The blue icons represent your input sources. These may vary depending on any peripherals connected to your computer. If an icon is blue, that means the source is on and will be included in your recording. If you wish to toggle off one of the sources, simply click the icon and it will turn gray with a line through it:

This indicates that the source is toggled off and will not be included in your recording. In the screenshot above, the recording would be of a webcam with audio, but no screen capture.

You can also toggle the source of each input:

This will allow you to select which screen you are recording if you have multiple monitors, or even which area of a given screen you are recording.

Similarly, you can toggle between multiple webcams or audio inputs:

Once you have the configuration of audio and video sources you want, it's time to hit the big red record button! You will see a 3 second countdown and then your recording will begin.

When your recording begins, you will see a small window at the bottom right of your screen with buttons to pause and stop your recording. Clicking the small pencil icon will bring up a window of additional tools useful for screen capture recordings:

These tools allow you to draw on the screen, add text overlays, add arrows for emphasis, and even highlight your mouse clicks with a halo.

Once you have completed your recording, click the stop button and confirm that you want to stop the recording. This will take you to a screen where you can give your video a title and description:

Once you have a title and description to your liking, choose Save & Upload to upload this to Kaltura. Once the video has finished uploading, it will appear in your My Media. If you would like to make another recording, simply select New Recording at the top of the window.

For more information, see this video walkthrough of Kaltura Capture.

Express Capture (Browser)

Perhaps the easiest way to record media and upload it to Kaltura is through Express Capture. This allows a quick, easy capture of video and audio from within your browser, without the need to open another program.

To begin, access My Media, either through Canvas or Mediaspace. From there, select Add New > Express Capture.

This will load a page in your browser containing the Express Capture interface, which consists of your video feed and a large red button at the bottom. NOTE: Your browser or computer may ask permission to use your webcam and microphone. Be sure to grant permission for these, or you will not be able to record with Express Capture.

There is a small gear icon in the top right, which will allow you to configure some settings. If you click on it, you can change the source for your audio input or video input:

Or, you can even disable one of the inputs with the blue toggle:

Once you have your inputs configured how you like, you're ready to record. Press the record button at the bottom of the window and record your video.

Once you have finished recording, click the stop button. You will then be able to watch back the media. If you are satisfied, click Use This. You will then be taken to a page to give your video a title and description, as well as choose how to publish it. When you have input all this information, be sure to click Save. Once the video has finished uploading, it will appear in your My Media.

For more information, see this article on Kaltura Express Capture.

Use Existing Media

You can also upload media recorded outside of Kaltura's software. To do this, access My Media through either Canvas or Mediaspace. From there, select Add New > Media Upload.

On the next page, navigate to the video file you would like to upload and select it. You will then be taken to a page where you can give your video a title and description, as well as choosing how to publish it. When you have input all this information, be sure to click Save at the bottom. Once the video has finished uploading, it will appear in your My Media.

Mobile Devices

Kaltura also offers a mobile app called Kaltura Mediaspace Go that allows you to access Mediaspace and even upload videos to My Media right from your smartphone or tablet.

This, combined with features like Screen Recording on iOS devices, allows you to do all sorts of things that are less feasible or intuitive with more traditional desktop recording software.

Using Screen Recording on iOS or iPadOS

To enable Screen Recording in iOS or iPadOS, go to Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls and touch the green plus next to Screen Recording. This will add the function to your Control Center, which you can access by swiping up from the bottom or down from the top right of the screen, depending on your model (more information here).

To use Screen Recording, open the Control Center and tap the Screen Recording icon:

This will trigger a three-second countdown, after which your screen recording will begin. To stop the recording, simply tap the red area at the top or in the corner of the screen. NOTE: you can enable your microphone while screen recording, which allows you to record audio input as well. Before recording, touch the Screen Recording icon with a long press and select Microphone On, then press Start Recording to begin.

Using Kaltura Mediaspace Go

The first time you open the app after installing it, you will be asked to enter your site's address:

Enter https://mediaspace.baylor.edu and press Go. This will bring you to the home screen of Mediaspace:

On the top left, click the the account icon and select Login:

You will then be taken to a DUO login screen. Use your Bear ID and password to login to Mediaspace.

You will now be able to upload videos to Mediaspace straight from your mobile device. To do this, select Upload at the bottom of the screen and choose the appropriate option:

Select Camera if you want to initiate a new recording, or Gallery if you want to select a video you have already recorded on your phone.

Once you have selected or recorded a video for upload, you will see a preview of the video. Here you may trim the video on either end by dragging the blue edges of the clip. Once you are satisfied with your video, touch Done. This will take you to a screen where you can give your video a title and select how you want to publish it. When you have entered all this information, touch Upload to begin uploading the video to My Media.

You can also view My Media from the Mediaspace homepage by selecting the account icon in the top left and choosing My Media on the following screen.
