Health, Zines & Graphic Medicine

A guide about health, zines, and graphic medicine

Event Overview

What is a Graphic Medicine Pop-Up Library?

A pop-up library is a small, temporary library that appears in unexpected places around campus. You don’t need to register or even know about it in advance—just stop by and explore! The goal is to meet students, staff, and faculty where they are and introduce them to resources they might not otherwise encounter.

For this event, we’ll be highlighting Graphic Medicine texts—works that explore the connections between comics and healthcare.

Teaching & Researching with Graphic Medicine

Graphic Medicine can be used in countless dynamic and engaging ways.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Course Integration: Use Graphic Medicine texts as assigned or optional readings to start discussions about healthcare, ethics, or patient experiences.

  • Discussion Starters: Pair a short excerpt or comic with class dialogue on themes like empathy, mental health, or the doctor–patient relationship.

  • Creative Assignments: Encourage students to create their own short health-related comic as a reflective or research-based project.

  • Interdisciplinary Research: Explore how Graphic Medicine intersects with fields such as narrative medicine, health communication, psychology, and visual arts.

  • Library Collaboration: Partner with librarians to design workshops or assignments that use Graphic Medicine as a tool for critical thinking and engagement with diverse perspectives.

  • Start a Book Club: Start a Graphic Medicine book club with your fellow health sciences majors.
