Historical Finds - Newspapers and databases

Newspaper articles can serve as a primary source of information for historical events.  You can investigate how people responded to current events, identify patterns over time, and examine subjects within the context of their time.

Exercise 1:

Use Newspapers.com World Collection database and search for one of the museums listed below.

  • The Charleston Museum
  • The Peale Museum
  • The American Museum/ Barnum Museum
  • Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art
  • American Museum of Natural History
  • Dallas Museum of Natural History
  • The Field Museum

 

Answer the following questions

  • How is the text and other information arranged on the page?
  • What details indicate when this was published?
  • What details suggest where this was published?
  • What do you see other than news articles?

 

Exercise 2:

Use Jstor to look up a topic.
