Text Descriptions of Images in Guides

This guide contains a long text description of images used in guides for web accessibility.

About this Guide

This guide serves as a landing place for text-based descriptions of complex infographics, screen shots, or images that a screen reader will not adequately describe.

Why do we use this guide instead of relying solely on the image itself or alt text?

The alt text field doesn't allow for structural elements like headers or bulleted lists. In addition, complex images can sometimes benefit from a longer description that walks a user through a process or provides additional context. For screen shots with a simple arrow or box, a short description in alt text may be sufficient.

Instructions for this guide are visible to guide editors on a hidden page.

Have you identified a library guide graphic that would benefit from a text description here? Please tell us!
