Nursing LRC Tools for Success: Evidence-Based Practice

Nursing Students Guide for the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing Learning Resource Center

Evidence-Based Practice and Evidence-Based Nursing

The book, Understanding Nursing Research, defines evidence-based practice as “The conscientious integration of best research evidence with clinical expertise and patients’ values and needs in the delivery of high quality, cost-effective health care” (Grove, Gray, & Burns, 2015, p. 503).  Evidence-based nursing is when evidence-based practice is applied to nursing.

If you are doing an assignment on evidence-based practice, use the definition your professor gave you.

Research for Evidence-Based Practice

Here are some places to find good research evidence.

Other University Libraries' Evidence-Based Practice Guides

There are also other guides that may shed additional light on the subject.  Both of these are focused on nursing.

Penn State- This is an excellent overview of EBN.  Several of the resources may only be accessed by Penn students. Baylor has many comparable resources.

University of North Carolina guide – It has a good definition of evidence-based nursing and good explanation of the distinctions between evidence-based practice, evidence-based nursing, and evidence-based medicine.

American Journal of Nursing Evidence-Based Nursing Series

The American Journal of Nursing did a series on evidence-based nursing.  These are the twelve articles in that series. This will give you an in-depth look into evidence-based nursing.  All of the articles are available in print at the Nursing LRC, as well as online by going to CINAHL and following the BU Info Links button.  The articles are available through OVID, which only allows one Baylor person to access a journal at a time.  Please logoff once you are done viewing the article.
