ART 4358 Contemporary Art: Journals and Articles

This guide was designed to help find information sources about contemporary art and artists.

Periodical? Journal? Magazine?

Wondering how to tell the difference and wondering why you should care? Follow this helpful link for a great explanation of the differences between magazines and scholarly journals! Also see link to Ulrich's which can help you figure out anything you'll need to know about a specific publication. The term "periodical" is kind of a catch all term used to refer to any publications that happen...well "periodically" like magazines and journals.

What journals are available electronically?

The resources to the right are great for searching for articles on specific topics or keywords, but if you already know what journal you need, check here to see what kind of access we might have to the full text. Often we'll have access to a journal through several difference tools and this page can tell you what years are available and where.

Discovering art journals at Baylor

Baylor has print subscriptions to a number of art journals (most of which are housed on the 2nd floor of Moody, but check Bearcat for locations because there are a few in odd places!). Baylor also provides online access to a number of journals (see "what journals are available electronically?" box below).  To see what journals we have, search in BearCat by general subjects and look for "art periodicals" (click here to perform this search in BearCat).  This search provide you an alphabetical list of all journals (current, back issues, online, microfilm).

Note that many times for art publications, online access can be a good way to search for content, but doesn't replace consulting the print issues in person when possible. Advertisements and quality color reproducction (if provided images are provided at all) may be lacking from online access.

For databases that can search for content throughout many of the journals, see the "articles" tab at the top.
