ART 4358 Contemporary Art: Books

This guide was designed to help find information sources about contemporary art and artists.

Searching for books

When searching for books in OneSearch, it's ok to do a quick search (which by default, is a keyword search), but another powerful way to focus your search is by using a subject search. The nice thing about a browse search by subject is that it can help guide you. When you enter a term, you will often see links pointing you to the official term used in the subject headings. For example, click on the links below and see what subject options appear. Click on one of these options and you can start to see how the subject headings are constructed. Remember that the subject is what the book is "about," so if you're looking for books about an artist, search that person's name as a subject. Searching for an artist as author will give you results that include catalogs (such as exhibition catalogs and Catalogues Raissonné).

Also note that the official subject heading used for contemporary (and also modern) art is "Art, Modern <followed by the century>". Don't be alarmed if OneSearch doesn't make the more specific distinction between "contemporary" and "modern" art! :-)
