University Libraries Resources for New Faculty: How Can My Students Get Help?

Students in the library

9 - Moment #9

Contact a subject specialist librarian

Suggest to your student to make an appointment with the librarian for your discipline.  The librarians can help students with a plan for their research papers, projects or literature reviews, point them to specialized subject databases or other research materials, help them set up citation management software and other research organizational tools.  The librarians are here to help!

Take the Introduction to Library Research Tutorial

The library has published a self-paced tutorial which guides a student through an introduction to the library, its resources and the research process.  At the end of the tutorial, there is a quiz.  If you want, you can assign it as a class exercise.  Please contact Ellen Hampton Filgo, Assistant Director for Liaison Services, if you would like to get a copy of the quiz in a format that can be uploaded into Canvas and graded there.

Bring your class into the library for research instruction

If your class has a major research component to it, or if you would like your students to

  • get a general introduction to the library and its resources
  • learn how to effectively find, access, and evaluate quality books, articles and more
  • learn about specific scholarly resources or primary source materials that would be helpful for an assignment
  • learn how to use a bibliographic citation management tool like Zotero or Refworks

Please contact your department's library liaison to schedule a time to bring your class into the library for an instruction session.  Alternatively, you could use the form on this page to request a session.

Request a Research Guide for your class

The library has a plethora of great resources and our librarians can very quickly create research guides for different classes or subjects, effectively curating our resources into a helpful guide and jumping off point for your students in their research projects or papers.  We use the very software that this particular guide was created with.  You can explore more of these guides by going to the main page.  Contact your departmental library liaison for more information or to request a guide for your class.
