Since it is intended for a broad audience interested in information on specific films, this retrospective index uses a film-centered approach to indexing rather than the journal-centered method employed in other indexes to film reviews. More than 8,000 feature films were selected for indexing that "have established themselves as being of continuing importance to film researchers.'' Basic popular, scholarly, and trade journals were selectively indexed as well as 440 popular and scholarly books on film.
