Using these Sources

The Baylor libraries own many specialized book review indexes. These indexes bring together references to book reviews in various special interest areas, such as reviews of Science Fiction books or books by specific authors. This page lists some of our specialized book review indexes, those that we felt would appeal to fairly wide audiences; be sure to read the descriptions if the title itself doesn't tell you the subject area the index covers.

Please note that the list here is by no means exhaustive. If you are interested in a particular area that we haven't included, try searching in OneSearch for the topic and add "book review*" to the search box. You may find exactly what you're looking for!

Specialized book review indexes in the Baylor Library

Available only online, this index references reviews of literature by African-American authors. It spans 1995 to 2005.
Business Library Review International
Call Number: Online
This online index references reviews of books in the business, finanace, and economics fields. Unfortunately, our current access is limited to issues published from 2000 - 2001.
The Best in Children's Books by University of Chicago
Call Number: Jones Ref Z1037.A1 B47
There are four volumes of this index, covering 1966 - 1972, 1973 - 1978, 1979 - 1984, and 1985 - 1990.
Children's Book Review Index by Gale Research
Call Number: REF Z 1037 A1 C475
This index covers 1975 to the present and is published yearly. The information is taken from Book Review Index, but this index focuses specifically on reviews of children's books instead of the wider gathering of information that Book Review Index includes.
L'Annee Philologique; bibliographie critique et analytique de l'antiquité gréco-latine by Société d'édition "Les belles lettres"

This is the major index for students of classics and the ancient world. It is not strictly a book review index, but book reviews are included under the various subject groups. You can also find reviews by looking under the name of the book's author in the index.
Education Index by H.W. Wilson Co

Education Index begins in 1929 and indexes articles, including book reviews, of interest to educators. Look under the various subject headings, including "Book Reviews" and author's names, to find what you need.
America: History and Life by ABC-CLIO
Call Number: Jones Ref Z1236 .A48 pt.B and Online
This index is particularly valuable to students of American History. Part B is specifically limited to book reviews. Notice that this source is also available online through EBSCO, which allows you to limit to book reviews under "Document Type" (scroll down to the bottom of the page!).
Historical Abstracts by ABC-CLIO
Call Number: Jones Ref D299 .H5 and Online
Historical Abstracts indexes books and articles about world history from 1450 to the present, not including the US or Canada (for those countries, see America: History and Life). While book reviews aren't specifically indexed, they use reviews to choose books to include, so you can find book reviews here by looking under the book's author and title.
Index to Book Reviews in Historical Periodicals by Scarecrow Press
Call Number: Jones Ref Z6205 .B73
This index focuses on American History, but includes reviews of books on other countries as well. Unfortunately, it only covers 1972 - 1977, but if the review you need falls within that time, it can be very helpful.
Philosopher's Index by Bowling Green University
Call Number: Jones REF Z 7128 P5 and Online
Book reviews have a separate chapter in each volume of Philosopher's Index, which indexes articles published in philosophy journals; coverage spans 1967 to the present. It is also available Online through FirstSearch.
Index to Book Reviews in Religion by American Theological Library Association
Call Number: Jones REF BL 48 I49x and Online
Coverage in the paper index to book reviews published in Religion periodicals spans 1986 to 1999. You can also find reviews from 1949 to the present in the ATLA Religion database, available under Electronic Resources.
Sociological Abstracts by Sociological Abstracts
Call Number: Jones Ref HM1 .S67 and Online
The library has print holdings for this resource covering 1952 - 2002. However, it's also available online through CSA Illumina, where coverage comes up to the present and you can limit to book review simply by typing "book review" in one of the keyword blanks.
Criticas: an English speaker's guide to the latest Spanish language titles
Call Number: Moody Periodicals and Online
The subtitle says it all--except that you can find coverage from 2002 - 2005 in the periodicals room, while you can access 2001 - 2005 online.
Technical Book Review Index by JAAD Pub. Co
Call Number: Jones REF Z7913 .T36
This index begins in 1935 and includes not only references to reviews of technical books, but also brief quotations from those reviews that give a sense of the reviewer's opinion about each book.
Nineteenth Century Online by Chadwick Healey
Call Number: Online
This is the source for all of you Victorians out there--whether your field is history, literature, etc. It provides access to book reviews, plus a lot more. The information here is also available on microfiche in the Jones library.
H-Net Reviews
Reviews of scholarly books written by faculty and grad students. Can be quite detailed, comparative, and lengthy.
