Analyzing crime and scam multimedia using NVivo 15

Generating Transcripts from YouTube Videos

This method uses only the YouTube player and is the fastest way to capture a clean transcript for data analysis in NVivo or other tools.

Step 1: Locate and Display the Transcript

  1. Open the Video: Navigate to the YouTube video you wish to transcribe.
  2. Expand the Description: Click the word "..." (Show More) or the down arrow located beneath the video title to fully expand the description box.
  3. Find the Transcript Button: Scroll through the expanded description until you find the option labeled "Show Transcript" (or similar text) and click it. The transcript panel will appear on the right side of the screen.

Step 2: Select the Entire Transcript Text

  1. Select the Start: Click on the very first transcribed statement in the transcript panel.
  2. Prepare the Shortcut: Press and hold the Shift key on your keyboard.
  3. Select the End: Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the transcript panel and click on the last transcribed statement. Every line and timestamp should now be highlighted.

Step 3: Copy, Paste, and Clean

  1. Copy the Text: With all the text highlighted, press the universal copy shortcut:
    1. Windows: Press Ctrl + C
    2. Mac: Press Cmd + C
  2. Paste into a Text Editor: Open a simple text editor (like Notepad, TextEdit, or Notepad++).
  3. Paste the Content: Press the paste shortcut: Ctrl + V (or Cmd + V on Mac).
