Medieval manuscripts are books created entirely by hand, predominantly from the 5th to the 15th centuries. Each manuscript is it's own work of art from the beautiful hand scripted text to the amazingly detailed marginal decorations and full page illustrations.
Watch the Getty Museum's video linked here to watch an overview of how these manuscripts were made.
As you might expect, the originals of these manuscripts are in limited supply and are tucked away is special locations all over the world. Even when given the opportunity to visit one, you have very limited access to seeing a single page behind glass. However, the Arts and Special Collections Research Center has an amazing collection of manuscript facsimiles. A facsimile is an exact copy. These copies are created in limited supply and made to resemble the originals as closely as possibly. Click here to virtually explore some of these facsimiles and complete your manuscript assignment.
