This guide is for students participating in the iEngage Summer Civics Institute.

Where to Search

There are a ton of different places (i.e. Google, the library's website) that you may go to online to search for information on your topic. For our purposes here, we are going to use a resource that we have through the Baylor Libraries. It is called Opposing Viewpoints in Context. This database offers a wealth of information on various social issues, including controversial topics such as gun control, climate change, immigration, and more.

Please note that this is NOT the only place to search for information on your topic. It is just one option that we will explore with the time constraints that we have.

Instructions

  1. With your group, head to Opposing Viewpoints in Context. You should not need to log in since you are already on the Baylor network.
  2. Type your broad topic into the search bar. In the example below, I searched for the term bullying.
    Opposing Viewpoints Search Box
  3. Explore your results. You should see featured viewpoints, academic journals, videos, statistics, magazines, and more related to your topic. Do any of these examples listed align with the how or the why of your issue that you explored earlier?
  4. Try entering something related to the how or the why instead of the broad topic (i.e. "bullying prevention programs"). How do your results differ?
  5. When you find an article, you can scroll down for the citation at the bottom of the article.
