Alteryx: Getting Started

This guide introduces users to some of the basic tools in Alteryx. Using data for Halloween candy, users will learn to import data into the workspace, cleanse data, and use basic Preparation, Join and Transform tools to create the basics of a workflow.

Beginning: Work canvas

Alteryx allows you to build workflows to automate data analytics.  Get started building work flows here in the work canvas area.

Know your tools

Alteryx tools which are used to build workflows are located in the tool bar above the work canvas.

Tools are arranged in groups according to their function, such as Preparation, In/Out or Join.  Click on the tool family to view the tools in that group.  Tool families may be added or taken away by using the gear icon at the end of the list of tool families.

For most tools, there are 2 anchors:

Left anchor = input anchor - shows inputs going into tool.

Right anchor = output anchor - shows data coming out of the tool.

Not all tools are the same when it comes to connections,  Many tools allow only one connection at a time.

There are a few tools, such as Join Multiple, which allow for multiple connections.

Check the anchor on the tools to see the number of connections it allows.  A solid green anchor = 1 connection.

See your results

Beneath the workflow canvas is the results pane.  The results pane is where the end product of a workflow can be viewed. With lengthy workflows, only a portion of the result is seen.  The results pane also contains any errors or warnings and how long it took to run the workflow. Remember - results are not seen until the workflow is run!
