Intro to Alteryx:Candy Inventory

THis guide contains basic skills for getting started with Alteryx.

Transform Tools

The Running Total tool creates a running sum for a numeric field in the incoming data stream.

For this work flow, use the CandyProduction file.  Bring the file into the workspace using the Data Input tool. Then drag the Running Total tool onto the workspace and connect it to the data file.  Click on the Running Total tool to see the configuration pane info.

Select Candy Total as the column to total, then click on RUN to run the work flow.  Click on the output anchor to view the results.  Go back and select Salesperson from the Group By section, then rerun the workflow.  Now the total has been grouped by salesperson.

The Summarize tool can conduct a host of Summary Processes, including: grouping, summing, count, spatial object processing, string concatenation, and much more.

Bring the Summarize tool onto the workspace and connect it to the CandyProduction file.  In the Configuration pane, select fields to use in the summary.

  • With the field(s) selected, click the Add button. Depending on the data fields' type, you may choose different Summary Processes. Processes will be grayed out if they depend on different Data Types than those selected.
  • Make the selection and it appears in the Actions section.
  • From the Actions section, you can select the field and use the  up,  down, and  delete buttons to specify field order for the output.
  • Rename a field by typing a new field name into the Output Field Name column.

Click on the field to select it , then click on Add to place it in the Actions box.  The Add menu shows actions appropriate for each field.  Once selections have been made, click on RUN to run the workflow.
