Baylor University Libraries Open Access Article Processing Charge (APC) Funding Pilot

Authors

Full-time permanent contractual faculty (tenure-line professors, lecturers, and academic professionals) who have had a manuscript accepted for publication, and who do not have other sources of funds (grant funds, for example) to pay article processing charges are eligible to apply.

  • Applications can only be made after the article has been accepted by the journal.  We cannot accept applications for funding at the time of manuscript submission.
  • Funding maximums for article processing charges (APC):
    • $3,000 per author per fiscal year (June 1 - May 31).
    • $3,000 for a publication in a fully open access environment.
    • $1,500 for an article in a hybrid journal.
  • External/other funding:
    • We request that authors with sufficient funding from grants or contracts not apply for funds.
    • We encourage researchers to include a line-item on future grant proposals for dissemination or open access costs.
    • We encourage those with co-authors from other institutions to share the burden of publishing costs among all the authors.

Publications

Only works that have been accepted for publication by legitimate publishers are eligible for funding.  The published works need to have undergone peer review before acceptance.  The following are lists and directories of generally acceptable open-access publishers and journals.  These lists are non-exhaustive.  If you are unsure of where to publish open access, these lists can be used to identify appropriate publishers and journals.  If you have questions about a specific publication or publisher, contact scholcomm@baylor.edu.

Attribution

We require that funded recipients:

  • Include the following statement in their acknowledgements "Publication was made possible, in part, by support from the Open Access Fund sponsored by the Baylor University Libraries."
  • Deposit a post-print (a copy of the final version, but not typeset, manuscript) and/or a link to the article into BEARdocs as allowed by the journal.

Other Considerations

All eligible authors are encouraged to apply; however if demand is high, preference will be given to:

  • Those publishing in fully open access publications (as opposed to hybrid publications);
  • Those who are first time publishing in open access publications;
  • Those publishing transdisciplinary research or research in the humanities and social sciences; and
  • Those who have not already received open access funding during the current fiscal year.
  • Those who have abided by the APC Terms and Conditions for previous publications
